How good are you at cryptic crosswords?

I am directing a play, and some of the script is/are cryptic crossword questions. We've solved all of them but one; anyone who can solve it, please do. (Also, do you know where the questions were first used) VESSLE PROVIDING SHELTER FOR TERRIBLY OLD PET Eight letters. According to another line in the dialogue, we think the third letter is P.

1. It is vessel not vessle, and "terribly old pet" suggests rearranging those 6 letters. How good is the source of these clues? Aside from vessle/vessel, is it typed correctly above? "Vessel" is a very vague bit of a clue. Could be cookery, could be transportation ... could be a word meaning "vessel" holding OLD rearranged, meaning PET (FAVORITE? but the clueing doesn't work!)
